The Arizona Hawks win the Stumptown Throwdown!
The Arizona Hawks men continued their winning season with a hard fought victory over the hometown Portland Steelheads in the Stumptown Throwdown in Oregon. The Hawks men started the day with a rematch against the Steelheads men who they defeated earlier in the year at the Western Regional Tournament in Colorado (you can watch a replay of Arizona vs. Portland/Wasatch from the 2025 Western Regional Tournament here and you can watch a replay of Arizona vs. Denver Reserves from Western Regionals here). The score remained close for the entire match with the Steelheads holding a 5 point lead, 27 to 22, at the half time break. The scores remained close with the lead changing several times in the second half before a Hawks rookie scored a goal in the last minute of the fourth quarter to break the tie and claim victory for the visitors with a final score of 7.8.50 to 6.8.44.
The Hawks women were also represented at the Throwdown with assistance from players from the Seattle Grizzlies and Portland Sockeyes. The home team started strong jumping to a two goal lead at the first break. However, the Hawks fortunes changed with the help of an Arizona first gamer who kicked six goals for the visiting combo team leading them to a comfortable victory.
Next up, the Arizona Hawks men and women will travel to San Diego, California, to compete in the Rob Dollar Cup on Saturday, August 23, 2025. The Hawks will complete their regular season with away rematches at the Orange County Giants on September 13, 2025, and at the San Diego Lions on September 20, 2025, before hosting the USAFL Nationals in Tucson, Arizona in mid-October.
Regular season practices are held Wednesday evenings from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM in Mesa, and non-gameday Saturday mornings from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM in Mesa. Occasional Monday evening practices are also held from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM in North Phoenix. Practice times and locations vary so check out our Schedule page for details on all practices and games. New (or returning) men’s and women’s players are always welcome to join us at any practice and no previous footy experience is necessary!
